How Crude Oil Reaches Kharg Island

Kharg Island is primarily an oil storage and export center rather than a major producing field. Much of the crude handled there originates at oil fields on the Iranian mainland.

A VLCC can commonly transport roughly two million barrels of crude oil, although the actual cargo varies according to the vessel, draft restrictions, operating conditions, and loading plan.

Suezmax Tankers

Suezmax tankers generally have a deadweight capacity between approximately 120,000 and 199,999 tons. They are smaller than VLCCs but remain important long-distance crude carriers.

Aframax Tankers

Aframax tankers generally range from approximately 80,000 to 119,999 deadweight tons. Their smaller size provides greater flexibility when operating at ports or terminals where navigation, berth size, or water depth may limit larger vessels.

Product and Support Vessels

What Happens During Tanker Loading?

Loading a crude-oil tanker is a carefully coordinated process involving the vessel, terminal operators, pilots, tugboats, surveyors, and port authorities.

Before loading begins, the tanker is guided toward its assigned berth and secured with heavy mooring lines. Terminal loading arms are then connected to the vessel’s cargo system.

Oil is transferred into a series of cargo tanks inside the ship. The flow must be carefully managed to maintain the tanker’s stability, structural balance, and safe draft. Crews monitor pressure, cargo distribution, tank levels, mooring conditions, and communications throughout the operation.

Once loading is complete, the cargo quantity and quality are verified. The loading arms are disconnected, required documentation is completed, and the vessel is prepared to leave the terminal.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes the Strait of Hormuz as the world’s most important oil-transit chokepoint.
