What Can Be Seen in Satellite Images?
Several prominent features can be identified when examining Kharg Island from above.
Crude-Oil Storage Tanks
Large circular storage tanks dominate portions of the island. These tanks receive crude oil transported from mainland production areas through pipelines.
Tank farms are usually easy to recognize because the circular tanks are arranged in organized groups connected by roads and pipeline corridors. Their bright roofs, circular shadows, and consistent spacing contrast with the island’s natural terrain.
Some petroleum tanks use floating roofs that move with the level of oil inside. Under favorable viewing conditions, analysts may use shadows and roof positions to estimate whether individual tanks appear relatively full or empty. Such estimates remain approximate and can be affected by lighting, image resolution, tank design, and viewing angle.
T-Jetty
The T-Jetty extends into the water from the eastern side of Kharg Island. Its long, narrow shape and tanker berths are clearly visible from above.
Large vessels may appear alongside the jetty during loading operations. Comparing images from different dates can show when berths are occupied, when tankers are waiting nearby, or when the terminal appears inactive.

Sea Island Terminal
The Sea Island terminal is an offshore loading facility situated in deeper water away from the shoreline. It was designed to accommodate very large crude carriers and other deep-draft tankers.
In high-resolution imagery, the terminal appears as a long offshore structure connected to the island’s petroleum network. Tankers berthed alongside it may be more than 300 meters long, making them easily recognizable in clear images.

In May 2026, images from the European Union’s Copernicus Sentinel satellites showed a large suspected petroleum slick west of the island. Subsequent reporting indicated uncertainty about its source. Iranian officials said the pollution did not originate from Kharg Island’s tanks, pipelines, or loading systems and suggested that contaminated ballast water discharged by a tanker may have been responsible.
The event demonstrated both the value and limitations of satellite monitoring. Imagery can reveal that an unusual feature exists, but determining its precise composition, source, and cause often requires field observations and additional evidence.
